Does GTA 6 have multiplayer? What Rockstar confirmed

Rockstar calls GTA 6 a single-player experience and has announced no online mode. What that means for playing with friends, and what happens to GTA Online.

Grand Theft Auto VI releases on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The question that comes up more than any other is whether you can play it with other people, and the answer as of September 2026 is narrower than most coverage suggests.

What Rockstar and Take-Two have actually said

When pre-orders were announced on 25 June 2026, the wording Take-Two used described Grand Theft Auto VI as "a single-player experience". That phrase has been consistent across the announcement, the storefront listings and the coverage since.

Rockstar has not announced an online mode for Grand Theft Auto VI. There is no name for one, no release window, no feature list and no pricing model. That is not the same as saying there will never be one — it is saying nothing has been announced, which is a different and much smaller claim than most articles make.

Separately, Take-Two has said that Grand Theft Auto Online, the multiplayer built on Grand Theft Auto V, continues to be supported after Grand Theft Auto VI launches. The company has not put an end date on that support.

So the confirmed picture is:

  • GTA VI at launch: single-player. Stated by the publisher.
  • A GTA VI online mode: not announced. No date, no name, no details.
  • GTA Online: still running, still supported. Stated by the publisher.

What has not been confirmed

Almost everything else. It is worth listing the specific gaps, because they are where confident-sounding articles fill in blanks:

  • Whether an online mode arrives months after launch, years after, or is announced separately.
  • Whether it carries the GTA Online name, progression or purchases.
  • Whether GTA VI will support co-op, sessions with friends, or any shared world at all.
  • Whether any of the above appears on PC, given no PC version has been announced.
  • Whether anything player-hosted is ever possible, which is a separate question from an official online mode and has had even less said about it.

If you read a piece that answers those with specifics, check whether it cites Rockstar or a person on the internet. The gap between "Rockstar has not announced" and "Rockstar has ruled out" is where most of the confident writing on this subject lives, and the two are not close to the same statement.

What this means practically

If you buy Grand Theft Auto VI on 19 November, you are buying a story game. Plan around that. It is a perfectly ordinary thing for a Rockstar release to be — Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped with its online component arriving later — but it does mean the "play it with my friends on launch weekend" plan does not have anything to attach to yet.

If what you want is a shared world with other people in it, that world already exists and is not going anywhere. Grand Theft Auto Online is supported. The roleplay scene on Grand Theft Auto V, which is a far more interesting form of multiplayer than most people realise, is at its largest, and the FiveM server list is where those cities are.

And if the appeal was never Grand Theft Auto specifically but a persistent community server you can settle into, that is what this whole site is for. Community servers across other games — the sandbox and roleplay gamemodes on Garry's Mod, for instance, which are worth understanding as a category — solve the same want without waiting on an announcement.

Why the uncertainty is the story

There is a strong incentive to write confidently about this. "GTA 6 Online release date" is an enormously valuable search term and a page that says "not announced" feels like it is withholding something.

It is not. The state of the information is that Rockstar has described a single-player game, has not announced anything multiplayer, and has said the existing online game keeps running. Everything past that is inference — sometimes well-reasoned inference from how the last two games were handled, but inference, and it should be labelled as such.

The one prediction worth making is procedural rather than factual: when Rockstar does announce an online mode, it will be on the Rockstar Newswire, and every credible outlet will point back at that post within an hour. Until a link like that exists, treat the details you see as somebody's guess.
