Two decades of unhinged sandbox modes

Garry's Mod Server List

Garry's Mod is less one game than a launcher for two decades of other people's ideas, and the gamemode is the only thing that tells you what you are actually joining. This list splits the GMod servers worth your evening by gamemode — DarkRP economies, Trouble in Terrorist Town lobbies, prop hunt, build sandboxes and surf — with the live player count that decides whether a round can even start.

Garry's Mod servers — frequently asked questions

How do I join a Garry's Mod server?
Turn on the console under Options, Advanced, Enable Developer Console, press the tilde key and type connect followed by the address and port from the server card. You can also add the same address in Steam under View, Servers, Favourites, which keeps it available even when the in-game browser is struggling.
Why does the first join take several minutes?
The server sends you its addon pack — custom models, maps, weapons and sounds — before it will spawn you in, and a large DarkRP city can be well over a gigabyte. Subscribing to the server's Steam Workshop collection in advance downloads the same content faster and keeps it between sessions.
What are DarkRP, TTT and prop hunt?
DarkRP is a city roleplay economy where players take jobs as police, hobos, gun dealers or criminals and build printer bases. Trouble in Terrorist Town is a social deduction round mode where hidden traitors hunt innocents. Prop hunt is hide and seek where one team disguises itself as furniture. Each is a completely different game on the same engine.
Do I need Counter-Strike: Source to play?
For many servers, yes in practice. A huge amount of GMod content reuses CS:Source textures and models, and without them you will see missing-texture checkerboards and ERROR signs everywhere. Owning and mounting CS:Source, or installing a community content pack, fixes it in one step.
