Discord communities

The name, the invite, the member total and the online count all came back from a single request to Discord for that guild, made as a bot the owner installed. Nothing is typed in by anybody and nothing is taken from a directory a community was found in — not its title, not its description, not its member count.

Online is how many members Discord saw present when we last asked, and every listing carries the time of that check. Members is Discord's own total and approximate by Discord's own definition — a better number than an owner's claim, and still not one we measured. It is not comparable to the figures on the player counts page, which come from asking a game server how many people are connected to it.

Nobody can be listed here without asking. Discord will not let anyone add a bot to a server without Manage Server, so the install is the proof of ownership — there is no form to fill in and nothing for us to verify by hand. Removing the bot removes the listing on the next check, which is the same fact read the other way round.

This replaced a check that read each guild's public widget. That worked without anyone's consent and needed the owner to have switched the widget on — four in five could not be listed at all, and the ones that could never carried a member total, so the figure above this paragraph was blank on every row.
