Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 3 Adds Cushions and Shaders

Mojang released Minecraft 26.3 snapshot 3, adding sitting cushions, single-use straw beds, custom client shaders, and data-driven brewing recipes.

Mojang released Minecraft 26.3 snapshot 3 on 7 July 2026, delivering furniture items and technical system overhauls. The snapshot adds sit-able cushions, disposable straw beds, and native post-processing shaders, alongside data-driven potion brewing recipes and a registry for number providers in Data Pack version 110.0.

Players inspecting the Minecraft server list will notice these additions altering how servers handle decorative sitting and respawn preservation during long expeditions.

New Decorative and Survival Blocks

Snapshot 26.3-snapshot-3 expands player rest options with two functional items designed around camp mechanics.

Cushions for Sitting

The cushion serves as a placeable item that players interact with directly to sit down. Crafted using three wool slabs sharing the same dye colour, cushions exist across 16 tinted options.

Placement follows fixed rules:

  • Cushions snap on top of any flat surface.
  • They lock horizontally along the block grid, resting directly on the support below.
  • Cushions possess no collision and can intersect with nearby items or blocks, though they cannot overlap another cushion.
  • Removing the supporting structure immediately destroys the resting cushion.
  • They are stationary and cannot be moved.

Straw Beds and Night Skipping

Crafting three hay bales yields four straw beds. This single-use resting mat allows players to pass the night cycle without overwriting their established world spawn point.

Using the mat destroys it once sleeping concludes. It cannot function in the Nether or The End; attempting to sleep on one inside either dimension breaks the block instantly. Mojang also added a dedicated entry inside the client Statistics menu tracking the number of times a character sleeps in a straw bed.

Command Additions and Post-Processing Shaders

The snapshot delivers a native management tool for visual post-processing on clients via the /posteffect command.

The Posteffect Command Structure

Server operators can now trigger and clear screen shaders dynamically across targeted users. The syntax includes:

  • /posteffect add <player> <posteffect>
  • /posteffect clear <player>
  • /posteffect list <target>
  • /posteffect remove <player> <posteffect>

These effects operate purely inside client resource packs rather than server memory. Because rendering takes place locally on the user's screen after standard game graphics complete, a dedicated server cannot verify whether an assigned shader genuinely executed.

Data Pack 110.0 and Technical Mechanics

Technical infrastructure moves forward to Data Pack version 110.0 and Resource Pack version 91.0, accompanied by the addition of Gothic language translations.

Data-Driven Potion Brewing

Brewing stands no longer rely strictly on hardcoded recipe tables. Datapacks can construct novel recipes and overwrite standard vanilla brewing using the minecraft:brewing structure. Each recipe file expects three primary fields:

  • input: an ingredient entry specifying the required item and an optional minecraft:potion_contents component predicate
  • reagent: the catalyst ingredient defining the required item and optional potion predicates
  • output: the item stack resulting from brewing

Predicates checking potion contents no longer depend solely on list matching. Datapack creators can filter effects by explicit criteria, evaluating duration, amplifier, ambient, and visible attributes across selected mob effects.

Component and Predicate Registries

The update introduces a minecraft:number_provider registry with types including minecraft:number_dispatcher, minecraft:conditional_value, and minecraft:weighted_list. These providers support new data components like minecraft:compostable, which determines composter layer chances using low, medium, or high chance logic.

Within world generation, the /place feature command accepts in-line definitions directly. Loot tables for blocks replace duplicated inline tool checks with shared predicate references: minecraft:tool/can_silk_touch and minecraft:tool/can_shear.

What This Snapshot Changes for Server Administrators

Running 26.3-snapshot-3 requires server operators to account for modified environment attributes and format version bumps.

Attribute Format Changes

Custom maps and server datapacks relying on bed behaviour must update key names. Within the minecraft:gameplay/bed_rule environment attribute, the explodes key is renamed to destroy_on_use. Administrators can also supply an optional destroy_on_leave boolean flag. The snapshot introduces minecraft:gameplay/straw_bed_rule using this matching schema.

For custom blocks, minecraft:block_transformer gains the optional boolean update_from_neighbors, which defaults to true.

Client-Side Shader Reliance

Because post-processing shaders reside on the player's resource pack, admins cannot treat /posteffect as a secure visual enforcement tool. Hosts targeting future updates like Minecraft 26.3 servers should keep in mind that shader handling remains experimental, with Mojang noting the features and commands may undergo redesigns in subsequent snapshots like Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 8.

What Players Will Experience

Players joining an updated world will see visual changes around bases and campsites immediately. Cushions eliminate the need for invisible armour stand workarounds to sit by campfires, while straw beds allow long mining or exploration trips without forfeiting a base respawn anchor.

On servers providing server resource packs, screen filters and environmental shader effects can now be triggered dynamically when entering designated areas or game phases.

Common questions

Does sleeping in a straw bed change your spawn location?
No, sleeping in a straw bed passes the night without setting or altering your spawn point. The item is consumed and destroyed upon use.
Can servers confirm if a posteffect shader was applied to a client?
No, post effects run entirely on the client within resource packs after normal rendering finishes. The server has no way of verifying if a shader actually executed.
How do you craft cushions in Minecraft 26.3 snapshot 3?
Cushions are crafted using three wool slabs of identical colour, which creates one cushion corresponding to that colour variant.
