What is a Minecraft SMP server?

Survival Multiplayer — the plain multiplayer game, played on one world that everybody shares and nobody resets. There is no objective beyond the one the players agree on, and the appeal is continuity: the base you build in week one is still standing in month six, and so is the road somebody else built to reach it.

Usually small, often whitelisted or application-only, and run by someone who plays on it. Expect land claims and a few quality-of-life plugins rather than a lobby and a game menu. The difference between a good SMP and a bad one is almost entirely the people already on it, which is why so many of them advertise a Discord before they advertise a feature.
