Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3 Adds Ice Caves for Hosts
Mojang released Minecraft 26.4 snapshot 3 with Ice Caves, the Frostbite mob, updated social menus, and Data Pack version 123.0 for servers.
Mojang released minecraft 26.4 snapshot 3 on 6 October 2026, delivering subterranean terrain generation alongside new combat mechanics and updated interface menus.
Following the debug changes in Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 2 Overhauls Fog and F3, this testing build introduces the Ice Caves biome, hostile Frostbite mobs, and pack format revisions that server operators need to account for.
Ice Caves and Glacial Blocks
Subterranean exploration receives its first frozen underground environment, accompanied by decorative hazards and light-emitting clusters.
Cave Generation
The Ice Cave generates beneath colder Overworld biomes. Its primary composition relies on Packed Ice and Calcite, with Snow patches scattered across the floor. Standard underground ores continue to appear embedded within pockets of Stone and Deepslate, but Glow Lichen never generates within the biome. Alongside standard cave monsters, Strays and Frostbites spawn throughout the terrain.
Icicles and Ice Crystals
Icicles generate hanging from cavern ceilings or standing from floors made of Packed Ice. Operating similarly to Dripstone, these speleothem blocks can grow downwards up to five blocks long when kept away from light sources outside the Nether. Icicles feature base, middle, and tip states. They detach and damage entities upon falling, hurt mobs landing on them, and shatter if placed in the Nether or exposed to nearby light sources.
Ice Crystals function like Amethyst Clusters. They emit light, can be oriented in any direction on a support block, and break when their supporting block is destroyed.
Combat Mechanics and the Frostbite Mob
Combat under cold conditions expands through a specialised zombie archetype and status effects.
Frostbite Behaviour
The Frostbite spawns in freezing biomes and adapts its combat behaviour depending on distance. At range, it throws Ice Balls that inflict 4 damage scaling with velocity, applying knockback before shattering. In close quarters, its melee attacks inflict the Freezing effect.
Frostbites can traverse Powder Snow without sinking and remain immune to Freezing slowdowns. Regular Zombies and Husks submerged in Powder Snow convert into Frostbites, while submerged Frostbites turn into ordinary Zombies when held underwater. Upon defeat, they drop Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls.
The Freezing Effect and Crafting
The Freezing status causes entities to shake and take escalating cold damage over time, mirroring prolonged exposure to Powder Snow. Vulnerable mobs take five times higher damage while afflicted. Wearing Leather Armor prevents freezing damage but does not clear or block the effect itself. Players can brew Ice Balls into Potions of Freezing, Splash Potions, and Lingering Potions, or combine a Lingering Potion of Freezing with eight arrows to craft Arrows of Freezing.
Social Menus and Debug Display Updates
User interface changes alter how multiplayer rosters function across connected worlds.
Other Players and Player Options
The Social Interactions screen has been replaced by the Other Players menu, opened via pause controls or the default 'P' keybind. Available on dedicated servers, Realms, and open LAN sessions, this roster lists current online occupants alongside recently departed users who spoke in chat. Selecting a name opens Player Options, centralising mute toggles, blocking, reporting, and friend requests. Muting hides incoming chat until the local client restarts.
Debug Overlays
The F3 diagnostics layer introduces chunk_section_status to evaluate local chunk rendering, which impacts client framerates at long view distances. The server chunk visualization setting splits chunk_load_status into an isolated overlay, while lightmap texture debug views can now render alongside framerate and network graphs.
Server Compatibility and Data Pack Updates
Operating this snapshot requires updating protocol dependencies and adjusting custom datapacks.
Data Pack format advances to version 123.0, while Resource Packs step up to version 100.0. Worldgen configurations using minecraft:speleothem_cluster now mandate placement_options, including rules for placement_mode (floor_and_ceiling, floor_only, ceiling_only), attachment flags, and waterlogging permissions. In addition, minecraft:large_speleothem has been renamed to minecraft:large_dripstone.
Administrators managing modded environments or tracking infrastructure through our Minecraft Server List should note that Spigot and Paper jars require development patches for format 123.0 before custom cave tables will parse without errors.
Player Experience on Updated Servers
Clients logging into servers running this snapshot will immediately notice altered combat handling and social menus. Snowballs now deliver direct knockback to players, and Snow layers can be laid directly onto Packed Ice blocks.
When exploring untouched chunks beneath snowy surfaces, players will encounter deep caverns illuminated by Ice Crystals rather than Glow Lichen. Surviving these depths requires watching ceilings for falling Icicles and stocking Leather Armor to mitigate Frostbite assaults, while those preferring unmodified survival can check active Minecraft Vanilla Servers testing the latest snapshot builds.
Common questions
- What data pack version is required for Minecraft 26.4 snapshot 3?
- Data packs must target version 123.0, while resource packs increment to version 100.0. Worldgen features referencing speleothems require new placement parameters.
- How does the Frostbite mob spawn and fight?
- Frostbites spawn in cold environments and inside the new Ice Caves biome, or when standard Zombies stay inside Powder Snow. They switch between throwing Ice Balls at a distance and inflicting Freezing via melee.
- What replaces the Social Interactions menu in this build?
- The Social Interactions screen has been replaced by the Other Players menu, bound by default to the 'P' key, which opens direct Player Options for muting, reporting, and friend requests.
