How to Install Unreal Tournament 3 and Join a Server

Install Unreal Tournament 3, open the server browser, and there is a reasonable chance you will be looking at an empty list.

That is not the game failing to find servers. It is the game asking a matchmaking service that belongs to a previous era of the internet, getting no answer, and having no way to tell you that is what happened. Games of this generation shipped with third-party master servers, those services were switched off years ago, and every one of them now has the same symptom: a browser that works perfectly and lists nothing.

The fix is to stop using the browser. Servers are joined here by typing an address into the console, which has always worked and does not depend on anything that can be turned off. Listings collect on the Unreal Tournament 3 hub.

Connecting, since that is the urgent part

Unreal engine games use open rather than the connect you would type in a Source or Quake game. Press the key above Tab to bring up the console and enter:

open 203.0.113.88:7777

Use the exact address and port from the listing. A host running several servers on one machine has moved most of them off whatever the default is, and an address without its port is the ordinary reason a connection appears to do nothing at all.

That single command bypasses the entire broken discovery layer. If a server is up and you have its address, you will get in.

Community projects have at various points stood up replacement master servers for games of this generation, which restores the browser for people who install them. Whether one is currently working for this game is a question for a community rather than for a guide, and the console command works either way.

Listings gather on the UT3 server list, where each entry is queried directly rather than relying on a master server that may no longer exist.

Getting a copy

Unreal Tournament 3 is a paid game, and its availability on storefronts has not been stable β€” the older Unreal catalogue has come and gone from sale more than once. Check before you plan an evening around it.

A later free content pack expanded the game with additional modes and vehicles, and servers vary in whether they run it. If a server refuses you or something looks wrong, a missing content pack is a reasonable first suspect.

The install is small by modern standards and the hardware requirements are irrelevant on any recent machine. No Steam account yet? Our Steam guide sorts that out.

Set your resolution and refresh rate explicitly in the video options rather than trusting the game to guess. Titles from 2007 guess badly on high-refresh widescreen displays, and a game running at 60 Hz on a 144 Hz monitor feels wrong in a way you will notice before you can name it.

What the game actually is

An arena shooter, faster than almost anything made since, with vehicles attached to half of it.

Movement is a skill in itself. You dodge by tapping a direction twice, and you can chain a dodge into a jump to cover ground quickly. A player who has learned this moves at a speed that makes an opponent who has not look stationary. Learn it before you worry about aim β€” it is the largest single gap between a new player and a competent one.

The shock rifle is the signature. Its secondary fire launches a slow ball of energy; hitting that ball with the primary beam detonates it into something much larger. Landing that combination on somebody who is dodging is the move the whole series is known for, and it takes a long time to get good at and never stops being satisfying.

The rest of the arsenal is deliberate. The flak cannon is a close-range answer. The rocket launcher loads multiple rockets if you hold the trigger. The bio rifle leaves sticky traps in doorways. Every weapon has a secondary fire that does something genuinely different rather than adding a scope.

Armour and pickups sit in fixed places on timers. As in every arena shooter, controlling those locations is most of the game, and a player who is collecting them is fighting every engagement from ahead.

The modes, and which servers run what

Deathmatch and team deathmatch need no explanation. Capture the flag is the classic version, and there is a vehicle variant on much larger maps that turns a flag run into a driving problem.

Duel is one against one, and it is where the game's competitive scene lived β€” no vehicles, no chaos, two players and a map, decided by movement and item control.

Warfare is the mode this game was built to sell. Each side has a core to protect, connected by a chain of nodes that have to be captured in sequence. Capturing a node normally takes time and exposure. But each team also has an orb β€” a physical object somebody has to carry β€” and delivering it to a node takes that node instantly.

That single mechanic is what makes the mode work. It means the fastest route to victory involves one player, on foot, carrying something slowly across a map full of vehicles, while their team tries to keep them alive. It creates a moving objective that everybody can see, and it is why Warfare servers stayed populated longer than anything else in the game.

The hoverboard is part of that. It is fast, it is the only way to cross a large map in reasonable time without a vehicle, and you are completely defenceless while riding it β€” one hit knocks you off. Being towed behind a friendly vehicle is faster still and considerably more dangerous.

Vehicles, and why they do not ruin it

Putting vehicles into an arena shooter should not work. The reason it does here is that infantry are never helpless, and every vehicle has a clear way to kill it.

The fast hover bike is the one new players meet first, usually by being run over by it. It is quick, it is fragile, and its whole purpose is crossing ground and harassing people who are trying to do something else. The armed buggy is the other light option, with a boost that will kill you as readily as anyone else.

Tanks are slow, heavily armoured and enormously dangerous at range, and they are helpless against somebody who has got underneath them. Aircraft own the space above the map and are removed by a single well-aimed shot from the right weapon.

Then there are the large ones β€” walkers on legs, and a vehicle so big it needs several people crewing it β€” which are less about combat effectiveness than about being a rolling objective that the whole enemy team stops what it is doing to deal with.

The design principle running through all of it is that a vehicle is a position, not an upgrade. Taking one commits you to what it is good at and exposes you to what it is bad at, and a player who abandons a burning tank at the right moment survives while the one who stayed in it does not.

On foot with the right weapon, you are never out of the fight. That is the trick, and remarkably few games have repeated it.

Learning it without other people

This is the game's quiet advantage over almost everything else on this site, and it matters a great deal when the server population is thin.

The offline bots are genuinely good. Not a training mode β€” a proper opponent, adjustable across a wide range of skill, that plays the objective modes competently and will beat you for a long time. You can play every mode in this game, on every map, at a difficulty that suits you, without a single other person being online.

Use it. Learn dodge-jumping against bots. Learn the shock combo against bots. Learn Warfare's node chains and where the orbs go against bots. Then go to a server already knowing the maps, which is the only way a new player has a reasonable evening in a twenty-year-old arena shooter.

Mutators are worth exploring here too β€” the game ships options that change the rules substantially, and the one where everybody has an instant-kill hitscan weapon is a well-loved way to practise aim and nothing else.

Server culture, such as it is

The honest position is that this game's population is small and concentrated. What remains are communities who chose to keep a server running, and there are not many of them.

That shapes the experience. The people on a populated UT3 server have been playing arena shooters since before some of them could drive, and a new player will lose badly for a while. It also means they will explain what you did wrong, because a small community wants new players considerably more than a large one does.

Read a server's description before joining. Mutators, content packs and custom map rotations vary, and a server running heavily modified rules is a different game from one running the default. Our note on what makes a server listing trustworthy covers spotting a listing with an actual community behind it rather than an abandoned box that still answers a query.

Favourite anything you find with people on it, and check it at the same time on a different day. Games of this vintage do not have populations spread evenly across the clock β€” they have a group of people who play on particular evenings. Our guide to finding the best game servers covers the general version of that problem.

Problems

The browser is empty. Expected. Use the console.

open did something and nothing happened. Check the port separately from the address. Then check the listing is not showing the server as offline.

You get in and are immediately dropped. Version or content pack mismatch, or a full server.

Mouse feels wrong. Turn off acceleration at the operating system level and check the raw input option in the game's settings. This engine predates the conventions every modern shooter shares.

The game runs at a strange speed. Set your refresh rate explicitly and cap the frame rate. Very old engines can behave oddly at frame rates nobody anticipated in 2007.

Where the rest of the series is

Unreal Tournament 2004 is the entry a lot of long-time players consider the best of them β€” faster, with the Onslaught mode that Warfare was built from, and with a stubbornly persistent community. If you like UT3's vehicles, that is where the idea started.

The original Unreal Tournament is slower, heavier and the one with the reputation. Both have servers kept alive by the same kind of people who keep this one alive.

Off to the side, Quake III Arena is the parallel tradition β€” no vehicles, nothing but movement and item control β€” and Quake Live is its long online afterlife. Everything you learn about controlling armour timings in one applies directly to the other.

If you end up running a server for this game, our piece on why nobody joins your server is the relevant reading, and its central point applies double here: an empty arena shooter stays empty, and the servers that survived did so because somebody was willing to sit in one alone until they were not.

JoinGG is a live directory of community game servers. Every listing is queried directly every fifteen minutes, so the player count you see was measured rather than reported by its owner, and each one carries a copyable connect address. Unreal Tournament 3 servers are listed here, and every game on the site has its own hub. Player counts across every game are on the statistics page.

Common questions

Why does entering the open command in the console do nothing?
Omitting the port number from the address is the typical reason a connection appears to do nothing. Hosts running multiple servers often move them off default settings, so you must enter the exact address and port, and confirm the server is not offline.
Why am I immediately disconnected after joining an Unreal Tournament 3 server?
A version mismatch, a missing content pack, or a full server will cause you to be dropped immediately upon joining. Servers vary in whether they run the later free content pack, making it a primary suspect if a connection is refused.
How can I fix the game running at a strange speed on a high-refresh monitor?
Set your refresh rate explicitly in the video options and cap the frame rate. The game cannot guess properly on high-refresh widescreen displays, and this engine can behave strangely at frame rates that were not anticipated in 2007.
