How to Install Unreal Tournament 2004 and Join a Server

Unreal Tournament 2004 is faster than you remember it being, and considerably faster than you are.

The movement is why, and listings for the game collect on the hub here if you want to see what is still running before reading any further. You do not walk between fights. You double-tap a direction to dodge, you chain that dodge into a jump to cover ground, and off the right wall you can dodge again in mid-air. A competent player crosses a map in a series of low arcs, never travelling in a straight line, and the reason your shots keep missing is that they are not where you are aiming by the time the projectile arrives.

Then there is the shock rifle. Fire the slow plasma ball, shoot it with the instant beam, and it detonates into something that will remove most of a person. Landing that on somebody in mid-dodge is the single most satisfying thing in a shooter from this era, and half the servers still running are full of people who can do it reliably.

The awkward part first

You cannot buy it. Epic removed the classic Unreal games from digital storefronts, and there is no current, official way to purchase a new copy.

People who own it still own it β€” the entries stayed in libraries β€” and second-hand physical copies from the era exist. If you bought it at any point before it was withdrawn, it is still yours and it still installs.

If you did not, this is a genuine barrier and there is no clean answer. This guide will not point you at a download on an unfamiliar site, because old game installers hosted by strangers are one of the most reliable ways to acquire something unpleasant. That is the situation, stated plainly.

Everything below applies to a copy you have.

Installing and getting online

The install is small and it runs on anything made this century. The complication is not the game; it is the server browser.

Like almost every PC multiplayer game of its generation, UT2004 asked a central master server which servers existed. Epic's are no longer answering. Communities built replacements, and a client pointed at one of those gets its browser back β€” a full list, sortable, filterable, behaving exactly as it did.

Which replacement to use is a community decision rather than a universal one, and the people running the servers you want to play on will tell you what theirs expects. Their instructions are the authority. A guide inventing a configuration would be sending you nowhere.

Once that is done, the browser works and the rest of this applies.

Connecting by address

This is an Unreal Engine game, so the console command is the Unreal one. Press tilde to open the console and type:

open 192.0.2.10:7777

Replace that with the real address and port. Press enter, and the client connects.

Two things people get wrong. The command is open, not connect β€” players arriving from Counter-Strike or Garry's Mod type the Source version and conclude the console is broken. And the port matters, because a host running six game servers on one machine cannot give all six the same one. Copy the whole address.

Favourite anything you enjoy. The population is small and time-shifted; a server that is empty at four in the afternoon has fourteen regulars in it at ten at night, and if you lose the address you have lost the server. What makes a server listing trustworthy is worth reading for how to tell a measured count from a claimed one, which matters most when the numbers are small.

The first join downloads things

UT2004 servers push their own content β€” maps, mutators, models, sounds β€” and a server running a custom map rotation will send you a great deal on your first visit.

The polite ones point your client at an HTTP location holding compressed copies of everything, which turns a ten-minute transfer into a short one. Servers without that arrangement send files over the game connection, one at a time, exactly as slowly as it sounds. Either way it happens once per file rather than once per join.

If a join sits on a filename for a long time, it is working. Leave it.

The modes, because there are a lot of them

This is the game's real distinguishing feature. Most shooters of the period had deathmatch and a flag mode. UT2004 shipped with a genuinely varied set, and each one has its own map pool and its own regulars.

Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are the baseline, played on tight arena maps. Rankin and Deck17 are the two names that will come up in any conversation about this game, and both deserve it.

Capture the Flag is where the translocator matters β€” a device that throws a beacon and teleports you to it, which turns a flag run into a movement problem rather than a shooting one. Face Classic is a floating platform in space with a flag at each end and snipers in the middle, and it is one of the most-played maps in the history of the series.

Double Domination asks a team to hold two control points simultaneously for a few seconds. It sounds fiddly and it produces frantic, coordinated football.

Bombing Run is a ball sport. Carry the ball into the enemy goal; while carrying it you cannot shoot. Passing is real and good teams do it constantly.

Assault is attack and defend against a sequence of objectives on heavily scripted maps, with vehicles and set pieces. It is the mode most unlike everything else in the game.

Onslaught is the big one. Two power cores joined by a network of nodes; you capture nodes to open a path towards the enemy core, and the map is covered in vehicles to do it with. The Manta is fast and fragile, the Goliath is a tank, the Raptor is an aircraft, and the Leviathan is an enormous mobile weapons platform that takes a team to protect and destroys everything it can see.

Onslaught is where UT2004's scale shows, and it is the mode most people who loved this game are actually nostalgic for.

Instagib is not a mode but a mutator, and it deserves a mention because entire servers run nothing else. Everybody has one weapon, it fires an instant beam, it kills in one hit. The result is pure movement and aim with nothing else in the way, and instagib CTF servers have been running continuously for two decades.

The weapon set, which is the other half of the game

Every weapon has two fire modes and both are useful. That sounds like a small design decision and it is the reason the sandbox has held up for two decades.

The shock rifle fires a slow plasma ball on one trigger and an instant beam on the other, and shooting your own ball with your own beam produces the combo. Good players do this at range, on a moving target, deliberately.

The flak cannon throws metal shards that ricochet off walls, and its alternative fire lobs a shell in an arc. It is the close-range weapon and it is enormously satisfying to hit somebody with a bounce they did not see coming.

The link gun fires plasma on one trigger and a sustained beam on the other, and pointing that beam at a teammate powers up their weapon instead of hurting them. In Onslaught, several players linked together heal a node at a speed that changes who wins.

The lightning gun is the sniper weapon: instant, powerful, and it leaves a visible bolt showing everybody exactly where you were standing.

The bio rifle puts globs of sludge on the floor, which is a trap weapon rather than a duelling one, and the people who understand this are annoying to fight.

The shield gun blocks incoming damage on its alternative fire and is what stops you taking fall damage from a long drop. New players discard it. Experienced players use it to reach places.

There is also the redeemer, which is a guided nuclear missile, appears rarely, and settles arguments.

Layered on top sits adrenaline: pick up enough of it and a short directional input sequence gives you a temporary effect β€” extra speed, invisibility, health regeneration. It is a small system that rewards knowing the game, and most players never touch it.

The bots are genuinely good

Worth saying, because the population is small and this is the mitigation.

UT2004's offline game is not a tutorial. The bots play every mode, including Onslaught, they use vehicles, they take objectives, they have difficulty settings that go well past comfortable, and above a certain level they will beat you convincingly. A full offline Onslaught match with bots on both sides is a real game rather than target practice.

That means a thin server list does not make this game unplayable, which is not true of most of its contemporaries. It also means you can learn the movement and the weapon timings before turning up somewhere.

Mods, and where three other games came from

The UT2004 modding scene was extraordinary, and the clearest evidence is what walked out of it.

Red Orchestra began as a total conversion for this engine β€” an Eastern Front simulation built on an arena shooter β€” won Epic's mod contest, and became a commercial game and then a series. Killing Floor started as a UT2004 mod before becoming a standalone game with a long life of its own. Alien Swarm was a top-down co-op mod here before being rebuilt and released free on a different engine entirely.

All three are listed on this site as games in their own right. That is a fairly remarkable record for one shooter's mod tools.

Plenty more never left: weapon overhauls, movement mods, jailbreak variants, racing modes, and a long tail of things one person made for their clan. Servers still run them.

Problems

The browser is empty. Master server configuration. This is the defining issue and everything else is downstream.

The join fails on version. Old games settle on a patch level and communities standardise. Ask which one.

Widescreen looks stretched or the field of view is wrong. The game predates the assumption. It is configurable, and community documentation covers it thoroughly.

Mouse feels floaty. Turn off acceleration at the operating system level first, then look at the in-game sensitivity and smoothing options.

Everything is a blur and you keep dying. Not a fault. The dodge is the mechanic, and until you are using it you are a slow target among fast ones. Play offline against bots for an hour with dodging deliberately in mind.

Where else to go

The rest of the family is here. The original Unreal Tournament is faster and meaner and has a stubborn population that never accepted any sequel. Unreal Tournament 3 took the series somewhere heavier and darker.

For the same instincts on a different engine, Quake III and Quake Live are the arena shooters this game spent its life being compared to, and Halo is the console-born alternative whose PC scene grew up alongside it.

And if the vehicle mode is what you want, Onslaught remains the best version of that idea anybody has shipped. Finding a server worth staying on will help you locate one of the surviving communities running it, and there are more of them than the state of this game would lead you to expect.

JoinGG is a live directory of community game servers. Every listing is queried directly every fifteen minutes, so the player count you see was measured rather than reported by its owner, and each one carries a copyable connect address. Unreal Tournament 2004 servers are listed here, and every game on the site has its own hub. Player counts across every game are on the statistics page.

Common questions

Why does joining a UT2004 server take so long on the first attempt?
The first join takes a long time because the server must download custom content like maps, mutators, models, and sounds to your client. If the server does not host compressed HTTP files, it transfers files over the game connection one by one. Once finished, each file only downloads once.
What console command connects to a UT2004 server IP?
Use the open command instead of connect. Press the tilde key to open the in-game console, type open followed by the specific server IP address and port number, and press enter.
Why are no servers showing up in my server browser?
Epic shut down the official central master servers that originally populated the list. To restore the server browser, you must manually point your game client toward a replacement community master server based on the instructions of the community you want to join.
