How to Install DayZ Mod and Join a Server

You wake up on a beach with a torch, a bandage and a painkiller. There is a city inland with a supermarket in it, and everything you need is in that supermarket, and so is everybody else who woke up on the beach in the last twenty minutes.

That is DayZ, and in 2012 it was a mod that a New Zealander made for a military simulator, and it accidentally invented a genre. Before the standalone, before the hundred imitators, before every survival game on the market had a hunger bar and a loot table, there was one map called Chernarus and a rule that if you died you started again with nothing.

The mod is still there. Listings for it collect on the DayZ Mod hub, and the people running them are running them on purpose, because the mod does several things the standalone chose not to.

What you need, and why it is two games

This is the part that stops most people, so take it slowly.

DayZ Mod is a modification for ARMA 2 β€” but not for ARMA 2 on its own. It needs ARMA 2 and its standalone expansion ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead, both installed, running together in the configuration the community has always called Combined Operations. The expansion brings the engine improvements; the base game brings Chernarus.

Buying one and not the other is the single most common mistake here. If a store page offers both in a bundle, that is the thing to buy.

The mod itself costs nothing. How you obtain and launch it has changed more than once over the years, and I am not going to send you to a download that may have gone stale β€” the honest advice is to find the community running the server you want to play on and ask them which route they use, because they will know and they will be current.

Our Steam guide covers account creation, and securing it properly is worth the five minutes.

The version problem, up front

A DayZ Mod server runs a specific version of the mod. Your client must match it. Not "be close to it" β€” match it.

The refusal you get when it does not is unhelpful and it will be the first thing that happens to you. Nearly every failed join in this game's history has been a version mismatch, and nearly every fix has been reading which version the server wants and getting that exact one.

This is also why the community launchers that once managed all of this were so popular, and why their gradual disappearance made the mod harder to get into than it needs to be.

Chernarus, and what is on it

The map is a chunk of fictional Eastern Europe roughly the size of a small county, and it is mostly empty. That emptiness is the point and it is what separates this from every survival game that came after.

The south coast is where you spawn. Elektrozavodsk and Chernogorsk are the two large coastal cities, and they are simultaneously the best early loot and the most dangerous places on the map, because everyone else is there for the same reason. The classic new-player death is being shot from the hill above Cherno by someone with a rifle they found ten minutes ago.

Inland gets quieter and better. Small villages with hunting stands, then the towns in the middle of the map, then the military installations in the north β€” the north-west airfield above all, which is where the good weapons are and where people go to shoot each other over them.

Getting there is a long walk. There is no fast travel and there is no vehicle unless you found one, repaired it, and hid it somewhere nobody looks.

The mechanics that made this thing

You bleed. Getting hit starts a bleed that will kill you if you do not bandage. Losing enough blood turns the screen grey and eventually black, and the only real fix is a blood bag, which in the mod cannot be administered to yourself. You need another person. That single design decision produced more genuine human interaction than any chat system ever has.

You break. A fall from a barn ladder, a bad landing, a bullet in the leg β€” a broken leg means crawling, and crawling from where you are to anywhere useful is not survivable without morphine or someone who has some.

Zombies are a terrain feature. They run outside in an infuriating zig-zag and slow down indoors, which makes buildings a refuge and open ground a problem. They are not the threat. They are the alarm that tells the actual threat where you are.

Your gear is on the server. Tents you pitch and vehicles you repair persist in the server's own database. That means a stash you spend a week filling is real, and it also means it is only real on that one server.

Death is total. No stash, no bank, no account-level progression. Everything you were carrying is on your corpse for whoever finds it.

The culture, including the ugly parts

Two words you will hear in the first week.

Server hopping is logging out on one server and back in on another to loot the same building twice. Ghosting is the combat version β€” logging out mid-fight, joining another server, walking behind your opponent, and logging back in. Both are why nearly every serious server enforces a login timer, and both are the reason some communities keep whitelists.

Combat logging is quitting to avoid dying. It is the most despised thing in this game and it is also, on a server with no protection against it, the rational move, which tells you something about why the good servers all have rules.

The good servers all have rules. That is the through-line. A DayZ Mod server without an active community attached is a place where the loudest behaviour wins, and picking a server here is much more about the people than the settings. What makes a server listing trustworthy covers how to read a listing for signs of a real community rather than a box someone rented and forgot.

The mod's own mods

DayZ Mod spawned its own ecosystem, and several of the branches are more popular than the original.

Epoch adds base building and a currency, turning the mod into something closer to a persistent settlement game. It is the most played variant by a distance and the one most new arrivals actually end up on.

Overwatch adds a large weapon set, and the combination of the two β€” universally called Overpoch β€” is what a great many servers actually run.

Origins built its own progression and its own map. Namalsk is a cold, small, hostile island that a lot of veterans think is the best map the mod ever had.

If a server's name contains a word you do not recognise, that is what it is: a variant with its own loot tables, its own rules and, importantly, its own version requirements.

Connecting

ARMA 2's multiplayer browser is the mechanism, and it is a browser from 2009 in every sense.

Launch into the mod, open multiplayer, and let the list populate. Filter aggressively β€” by ping, and by the mod variant if the browser gives you that option. Sorting by player count and joining the fullest server is a reasonable first move and a poor long-term strategy.

For a specific server, the browser has a remote option that accepts an address directly. Give it the full thing including the port. Servers of this kind are almost never on a default port, and hosts running a dozen DayZ servers on one machine have given each of them a different one. An address without a port is the most common reason a direct join does nothing at all.

Once you find somewhere with people and rules you can live with, favourite it and stop looking. Your tent, your car and your reputation only exist on that one server, and hopping between servers means starting all three again every time.

Your first hour, in the order that works

Do not go to the city. Every instinct says head for the large buildings with the loot in them. Every experienced player is watching those buildings. Loot the small coastal villages instead and go inland while you still have nothing worth taking.

Drink before you need to. Wells and ponds refill a bottle, and thirst kills more new players than anything with teeth.

Find a backpack early. Carrying capacity is the constraint on everything, and a larger pack is worth more than a better gun for the first several hours.

Take the hatchet over the gun. Firing a weapon in this mod is an announcement. It brings zombies from a considerable distance and it tells any player within earshot exactly where you are and that you have something worth coming for. A melee weapon kills quietly.

Learn to navigate without a map. You do not start with one. Until you find one, you are working from road signs, coastlines, and the shape of the hills, which sounds tedious and is genuinely one of the better parts of the experience.

Assume everyone will shoot you. Not because everyone will β€” a surprising number of encounters end peacefully β€” but because the cost of being wrong is asymmetric. Approach from cover, talk before you get close, and accept that the person who spoke first is usually the one being honest.

The mod also tracked your behaviour. Killing other survivors pushed you toward looking like a bandit; helping them pushed the other way, and your appearance told strangers something about you before you said a word. It was a crude system and it produced more genuine drama than most scripted narratives manage.

Problems

Refused on join, version error. The mod version does not match. This is the answer roughly nine times out of ten.

Kicked by the anti-cheat immediately. ARMA's anti-cheat runs on these servers and updates independently. Let it update rather than trying to work around it.

Terrible framerate in cities. ARMA 2 is a simulator with a draw distance measured in kilometres. View distance and object detail are the settings that matter; everything else is decoration.

The server list is empty. Refresh several times, then check your filters, then try connecting to a known address directly. All three are worth doing before deciding the game is gone.

You died on the beach with nothing. Yes. Again tomorrow.

Where this all went

DayZ is the standalone the mod became β€” its own engine, its own map lineage, its own decade of development. It is a different game with the same spine, and it is the one with the larger population.

ARMA 2 itself has plenty of life beyond DayZ, and ARMA 3 inherited both the simulation and most of the modding community. ARMA Reforger is the current engine.

If what appeals is the survival loop rather than the military simulation underneath it, Rust took the raiding and base-building further than anyone, and Project Zomboid does the same slow, unforgiving death from a completely different angle.

JoinGG is a live directory of community game servers. Every listing is queried directly every fifteen minutes, so the player count you see was measured rather than reported by its owner, and each one carries a copyable connect address. DayZ Mod servers are listed here, and every game on the site has its own hub. Player counts across every game are on the statistics page.

Common questions

Why is my direct join failing to connect to the server?
You are likely missing the server port in the connect address. Hosts running multiple DayZ servers on one machine assign a unique port to each one. Submitting an address without a port is the most common reason a direct join fails to respond.
Can I give myself a blood transfusion to stop the grey screen effect?
No, you cannot administer a blood bag to yourself in DayZ Mod. When you lose enough blood from bleeding, you must rely on another player to apply the blood bag for you.
What happens to my vehicles and tents if I change servers?
They remain on the original server and will not transfer over. Your tents and repaired vehicles persist only in the specific server's local database, meaning you will start fresh if you play elsewhere.
