How to Download & Install FiveM: Beginner Guide (2026)

What you need before you start, where to download FiveM safely, how to install it, register a Cfx.re account and connect to a GTA roleplay server.

If you have watched a GTA roleplay stream and wondered how to get into one of those servers, the answer is FiveM.

FiveM is not a game you buy. It is a modification framework for Grand Theft Auto V that lets communities run their own multiplayer servers with their own rules, jobs, vehicles, scripts and economies. It is the reason a GTA server can feel like a police procedural, a racing league or a small city with a functioning legal system.

Getting into it involves more steps than most games, and one requirement that catches people out before they start.

This guide covers all of it: what you need, where to download FiveM, how to install it, how to register, and how to actually connect to a server.

Before Anything Else: You Need a Legitimate Copy of GTA V

This is the requirement people skip past, so it goes first.

FiveM requires a legally owned, up-to-date copy of Grand Theft Auto V. Steam, Epic Games Store or Rockstar Games Launcher β€” any of those is fine. FiveM does not include the game and cannot be used instead of owning it.

It also will not work with a pirated copy. This is not a policy statement, it is how the software behaves: FiveM verifies your game installation and will refuse to run without a legitimate one.

So the actual shopping list is:

  • A PC copy of GTA V that you own
  • A Rockstar Games Social Club account
  • FiveM itself, which is free

If you already own GTA V on a console, that does not help. FiveM is PC only.

If you own it on PC but have never launched it, launch it once through its own launcher and let it finish updating before you install FiveM. A half-updated GTA V is one of the most common causes of a FiveM install that will not start.

Legacy and Enhanced

Rockstar shipped an updated build of GTA V on PC, and Cfx.re β€” the team behind FiveM β€” has been working through what that means for servers.

For a new player the practical advice is simple: check which build the community you want to join is running, and match it. Servers do not all move at the same time.

We wrote about FiveM's Enhanced client and what it changed for server owners if you want the longer version.

What Are the System Requirements?

If GTA V runs well on your PC, FiveM will generally run.

The caveat is that heavily scripted roleplay servers ask more of your machine than the base game does. A city server streaming hundreds of custom vehicles, clothing assets and scripts is doing considerably more work than singleplayer GTA.

More RAM helps. An SSD helps a great deal, because joining a busy server involves loading a lot of content at once.

If GTA V is already borderline on your hardware, expect a large RP server to be worse rather than better.

Step 1: Download FiveM

Download FiveM from the official FiveM website, operated by Cfx.re.

That is the only place you should get it.

FiveM is another heavily impersonated download. Search results and video descriptions are full of mirrors, "cracked" builds and installers bundled with other software. There is no reason to use any of them β€” FiveM is free from the official site, and a modified client is a good way to lose your Rockstar account or your PC.

The download is a single executable.

Step 2: Install FiveM

Run the file you downloaded.

FiveM installs itself rather than asking a long series of questions. On Windows it sets itself up in your user profile rather than in Program Files, which is deliberate and normal β€” it needs to be able to update and write cached game content without fighting permissions.

It will then download the components it needs. Let it finish.

If Windows or your antivirus flags the installer, this is common for game modification tools. Verify you downloaded it from the official site before allowing it. If you did not, delete it and start again from the official site.

Step 3: Point FiveM at Your GTA V

The first time FiveM runs, it needs to find your copy of GTA V.

Usually it locates the installation on its own. If it cannot, it will ask you to point it at the folder where GTA V is installed.

That folder is the one containing the game itself, not the launcher and not a shortcut.

Once it has found the game, FiveM prepares what it needs and takes you to its own interface.

Step 4: Create a Cfx.re Account

FiveM is tied to the Cfx.re ecosystem, and creating an account there is worth doing early.

You register through the Cfx.re forum, and that account is what identifies you across FiveM's services.

Why it matters: many servers use it for allowlisting, priority queues, in-game identity and support. On a busy roleplay server, your Cfx.re identity is often how staff know who you are between sessions.

You will also be asked to sign in to your Rockstar Social Club account, since FiveM is running your legitimately owned copy of GTA V.

Use a real email you control, and secure the account properly. On established RP servers, an account with history, whitelist approvals and character progression is genuinely valuable β€” and that makes it worth stealing.

Step 5: Find a Server

Now the interesting part.

FiveM includes a built-in server browser. Open it and you will see thousands of servers with names, player counts and tags.

This is where most new players make their first mistake: they sort by player count, join the biggest server they see, spend forty minutes in a queue, arrive with no idea what the rules are, and get kicked within the hour.

FiveM servers are not interchangeable. The differences are enormous.

Some are serious roleplay with strict character rules, application processes and in-character radio protocol. Some are drift and racing servers. Some are pure deathmatch. Some are economy simulators. Some are police-heavy. Some are chaos.

Joining a strict RP city expecting free-roam mayhem is the fastest possible route to a ban, and it is entirely avoidable by reading first.

Our guide to choosing a FiveM roleplay server goes through what actually separates them.

You can also browse the FiveM server list on JoinGG, where every status and player count was measured by querying the server directly rather than copied from what the server claims about itself. If you want a general method for comparing communities before you commit, see our guide to finding the right server.

Step 6: Connect to a Server

There are three normal ways in.

From the server browser. Find the server, select it, connect. This is the ordinary path.

From a cfx.re/join link. Many communities publish a join link on their website or Discord. Opening it hands the connection straight to FiveM.

From the console. Press F8 in FiveM to open the console and use the connect command with the server's address. This is how you reach a server that is not listed publicly, when the community has given you the address directly.

Whichever route you take, the same thing happens next.

The First Join Takes a While

When you connect to a FiveM server for the first time, it sends you its resources: scripts, vehicles, clothing, maps, sounds and anything else the community has added.

On a large roleplay server this can be a substantial download. It is not unusual for a first join to take several minutes.

This is normal, and it is cached. The second time you join that server it will be much faster, because you already have most of what it needs.

If a first join seems to hang, give it longer than you would give a normal game. If it genuinely stalls at the same resource every attempt, that is worth reporting to the server's staff β€” it is usually a problem on their side, not yours.

Queues and Priority

Popular RP servers have queues. Sometimes long ones.

Many communities offer priority through their own systems. Whether that is worth it is your call, but be aware that a full server at peak time may simply not be joinable without it.

If a server is always full when you can play, that is useful information about whether it is the right server for you.

Step 7: Read the Rules Before You Do Anything

On most games this is optional advice. On FiveM roleplay servers it is the difference between playing and being banned in the first hour.

Serious RP servers enforce concepts that will be unfamiliar if you have only played normal GTA Online. Rules commonly cover things like staying in character, not using knowledge your character could not have, not starting conflict without reason, and treating your character's life as something with consequences.

You do not need to master any of that before joining. You do need to know it exists, and that "I did not know" is not usually accepted.

Read the server's rules page. Join its Discord. Many communities run new-player guides precisely because they would rather teach you than ban you.

Whitelist Servers

Many of the best FiveM communities are allowlisted. You apply, sometimes with a written application or an interview, and you are approved before you can play.

This filters out people who will not read the rules, which is exactly why those servers are worth joining. If you are looking for a server where the roleplay is actually taken seriously, applying to one is usually a better use of an evening than queueing for an open one.

If you end up running a server yourself, the application process is worth thinking about properly β€” we wrote about running a whitelist people actually apply to.

Why Can't I Connect to a FiveM Server?

A short list covers most cases.

GTA V is not updated. Launch it through its own launcher, let it patch, then try FiveM again.

FiveM is out of date. Let it update.

The server is on a different build. Servers running a different game build than your client will refuse the connection.

The server is genuinely offline. Or it is up but its list entry is stale. Server software updates are a common reason a running server shows as offline on server lists.

You are not whitelisted. If the server requires an application, connecting before approval will not work.

You are banned. Bans on large RP servers can be shared between communities more than new players expect.

The queue is full. Not a failure, just a wait.

Your cache is corrupt. FiveM keeps downloaded server content locally. If one specific server fails repeatedly while others work, clearing FiveM's cached data for it is a reasonable step.

If the Server Runs Badly

Poor performance on a FiveM server is not always your PC.

Heavily scripted servers can be limited by the server's own resources rather than yours, and the symptoms look identical from the inside. Our write-up on where the milliseconds actually go on a FiveM server explains what separates the two.

Before rebuilding your entire installation, check whether other players are complaining at the same time. If everyone is stuttering at once, it is not your graphics card.

FiveM Beginner FAQ

Is FiveM free? Yes. FiveM itself is free. GTA V is not, and you must own it.

Do I need GTA V to use FiveM? Yes. A legitimate, owned PC copy. FiveM verifies it and will not run otherwise.

Does FiveM work with a pirated copy of GTA V? No.

Can I play FiveM on console? No. FiveM is PC only.

Will FiveM get me banned from GTA Online? FiveM runs separately from GTA Online rather than modifying it. Keep them separate, do not carry modifications between them, and follow Rockstar's terms.

Do I need a Cfx.re account? You should create one. Many servers rely on it for identity, allowlisting and priority.

Why is my first join so slow? The server is sending you its custom content. It is cached afterwards.

Do I need mods installed to join? Normally no. FiveM servers send you what they need. Locally installed singleplayer mods can actually cause problems.

Can I use the same install for multiple servers? Yes. One FiveM installation connects to any server.

Is roleplay required? On roleplay servers, yes. There are also racing, deathmatch and free-roam servers where it is not.

Getting Started Properly

Install FiveM, create your Cfx.re account, and then spend more time choosing a server than you spent installing anything.

That last part is the real advice in this guide. FiveM's install is straightforward. The difference between enjoying it and giving up in a week is almost entirely about which community you land in.

Browse the FiveM server list to see which communities are online now and how busy they actually are, read a few rule pages, join a Discord or two, and pick one that matches the kind of game you want to play.

Then read its rules before you drive anywhere.

If GTA turns out to be the beginning rather than the destination, you can browse every game we list from there.

JoinGG is a live directory of community game servers β€” current status, players online right now, and a copyable address for every listing.

Common questions

Where does FiveM install itself on Windows?
FiveM installs into your user profile rather than in Program Files. It uses this location deliberately so it can update its files and write cached game content without running into system permission issues.
Why is Windows Defender flagging the FiveM installer?
Antivirus tools commonly flag game modification software like FiveM. If you downloaded the executable directly from the official Cfx.re website, you can safely allow it through your security software.
