Ravenhill DarkRP review: the six-week economy reset actually works

A DarkRP city that wipes its economy every six weeks should feel pointless. After three cycles on Ravenhill, it is the reason the server is still good.

DarkRP has an ageing problem. A server that has been running for five years has players with billions in the bank, every property owned, and a new arrival whose realistic ceiling is being someone's employee forever. Ravenhill's answer is blunt: wipe the economy every six weeks. I played three full cycles to see whether that is a gimmick.

The premise

On reset day, money goes to zero. Printers, properties and stored inventory go with it. What carries over is cosmetic — your unlocked jobs, your title, your playtime badge. Everything that determines power resets; everything that represents history stays.

It sounds like it should destroy long-term investment. In practice it does something more interesting: it makes the first week of every cycle the best week, and it gives that week to everyone at once.

What works

The power curve is short and everyone is on it

Week one is genuinely chaotic in a good way. Nobody has a fortified base, printers are cheap and fragile, and the police force is as broke as the criminals. A new player joining on day two is three days behind, not four years.

Printers with heat force presence

Money printers overheat and burn if left unattended. That single design decision converts the classic DarkRP AFK income problem into an activity: someone has to be in the room, which means the room can be raided, which means there is a reason for the police to exist.

The police department is a real institution

Warrants, a wanted list, a jail timer, elected mayor with a term limit and an internal affairs channel where you can complain about an officer and have it go somewhere. In a genre where "police" usually means whoever picked the job with a gun, this is the difference between roleplay and a deathmatch with hats.

The best session I had was a two-hour corruption arc that ended with a mayoral impeachment. Nobody shot anybody. That should not be remarkable on a DarkRP server, and it is.

What does not work

  • Reset day itself is a mess. The hour after a wipe is a land rush, and if you cannot be online for it you start the cycle behind. A staggered opening would fix this.
  • Weeks five and six sag. Once the top groups have consolidated, the last fortnight is quiet. The cycle is arguably two weeks too long.
  • The custom content download is heavy. Roughly 900 MB on first join. Subscribing to the workshop collection first helps, but plenty of people will bounce at the loading screen.
  • Job balance is uneven. A couple of the twenty-five jobs are clearly better than the rest, and everybody knows which.

Who it is for

Ravenhill suits people who want DarkRP to have structure without becoming a whitelist-and-interview commitment. There is no application, the rules are enforced with warnings before bans, and the reset means turning up mid-cycle is survivable rather than pointless.

It does not suit people who want to build one empire and keep it. If that is the appeal for you, a persistent-economy server is the right choice and you will resent this one by week three.

The verdict

The six-week reset is not a gimmick, it is the load-bearing wall. It solves the wealth-concentration problem that quietly kills most long-running DarkRP servers, and it does it without punishing anyone for having played a long time. The sag at the end of each cycle is a real flaw and a shorter cycle would probably fix it.

Worth playing if: you like DarkRP but have bounced off servers where the economy was already decided. Skip if: permanence is the whole point for you.

Ravenhill's entry, connect string and current player count are on the Garry's Mod server list. Reset dates are posted in their Discord about a week ahead, and joining on day one is genuinely the way to see this server at its best.
